Derek graduated from the University of Westminster in 1998 with 1st class Honours in Mixed Media Art and in 2000 received an MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design. He has lived in London and Bristol, and for two years in Rio de Janeiro where he worked with N-Imagem Art & Technology Research Group based at the School of Communication, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. In 2004 Derek relocated to Hobart where he is active as both artist and curator, recently Exhibition Development Fund recipient through C.A.S.T. Gallery in Hobart, awarded by National Exhibition Touring Support – NETS, his exhibition Room accepted for the 2007-2008 touring program. He is also currently undertaking casual teaching on the Electronic Media program at the Tasmanian School of Art, University of Tasmania.
Derek works primarily with the moving image, mixed media and installation to develop site-specific and gallery-based art works. His approach to his practice is informed by experimental film and video as art practice since the 1960s. Recent work explores the time-based and experiential environment of installation art through the manipulation and recontextualisation of found material.
